Treaty of Amity and Commerce Between the United States and Japan

The Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and Japan was signed on July 29, 1858 and entered into force on July 4, 1859. The treaty secured diplomatic and trade privileges for the U.S., as well as rights for U.S. citizens living in Japan. It is sometimes referred to as the Harris Treaty, as it was negotiated by Townsend Harris, the first U.S. Consul to Japan.
