Toyohiko Takami, the first Japanese Medical Doctor in the U.S. and the Founder of the Japanese Mutual Aid Association
Dr. Toyohiko Campbell Takami was a medical expert and the first Japanese to obtain a medical license in the U.S. Born in Kumamoto, Takami moved to New York at the age of 16 and learned English under the guidance and support of Ms. Nancy E. Campbell. He graduated from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania and then Cornell University School of Medicine in 1906. He opened a clinic in what is now known as the DUMBO district of Brooklyn in 1906. In addition to being consistently involved in medical care and health management for poor workers and Japanese residents, he founded the Japanese Mutual Aid Association (renamed the Japanese Association in 1930, now the Japanese American Association of New York) in 1907. He served as Chairman of the organization for a total of 14 years. Takami’s other legacy is the establishment of the Japanese Cemetery located in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Queens.
