Admiral Togo Welcomed to New York

Admiral of the Imperial Japanese Navy Heihachiro Togo traveled to New York City on the Lusitania, where he was greeted by U.S. officials including Assistant Secretary of State Chandler Hale, Major General Frederick D. Grant and Adjutant General William Verbeck of the New York National Guard. (William Verbeck, seated on left, was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1861, the son of a missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church. He was educated at Imperial University of Japan.)
