Unforgotten New York Stories:
Japanese and Japanese Americans in the 1940s

Despite the wealth of information available on the history of Japanese Americans on the West Coast, the history of Japanese, Japanese Americans, and their pro-democracy movement in the New York area during World War II remains largely overlooked. In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Digital Museum of Japanese History has undertaken a project to illuminate these narratives of Japanese and Japanese Americans in the 1940s. This digital exhibit sheds light on the often overlooked narratives of Issei and Nisei artists, journalists, writers, activists, and community leaders during World War II. The Digital Museum utilizes a diverse array of materials, including artwork, photographs, publications, documents, and oral histories, to illustrate this historical account.
